Tardozzi’s Warning: Ducati Cannot Keep Relying on Marquez to Paper Over the Cracks

Davide Tardozzi is not a man who panics easily. The Ducati team principal has spent years at the top of MotoGP, navigated title fights, managed egos and overseen the most dominant era in the sport’s modern history. When he speaks publicly about Ducati’s shortcomings, people in the paddock pay attention. After Brazil, he spoke very publicly indeed.
“We can’t always rely on Marc’s talent to make up for our shortcomings,” Tardozzi told Motorsport.com after the Brazilian Grand Prix. “These have been two very difficult races. They’ve taught us a lot. We’re no longer alone. Our rivals have improved significantly and now we must prove that Ducati is capable of closing the gap.”
Two sentences. Two admissions. Ducati have a problem, and they know it.
The scale of that problem becomes clear when you look at the numbers. After the opening two rounds of 2026, Aprilia took three of the top five positions in Brazil and dominated throughout. Marc Marquez won the Sprint but could not match the pace of Bezzecchi and Martin on Sunday, finishing fourth. Thailand was even worse. Ducati’s absence from the podium ended an 88-race streak stretching back to the 2021 British Grand Prix. That is the kind of statistic that sends shockwaves through a factory.
Tardozzi described Thailand as a slap in the face, acknowledging that Aprilia had done a great job and that Bezzecchi had been in that kind of form since the middle of 2025. His explanation for the performance gap pointed to the Desmosedici behaving completely differently in race conditions compared to testing, something he admitted the team still does not fully understand. That is a troubling thing for any factory to say two rounds into a championship season.
The Marquez issue sits at the heart of everything. In Brazil, Marquez lost significant time to Bezzecchi in the opening laps due to a lack of feeling, and the four second gap at the flag told its own story. Marquez himself identified his opening lap pace as the only thing he is currently missing on the GP26. Tardozzi noted his right shoulder is still not fully recovered from surgery and predicted it would improve over the coming weeks. When a defending champion is running at reduced physical capacity and still finishing fourth, the talent level is not the issue. The bike underneath him is.
Tardozzi was also honest about Bagnaia. He acknowledged Ducati needs to give him a bike on which he can ride with confidence, while noting that Bagnaia’s own qualifying crash in Brazil compromised the entire weekend before a wheel had been turned in anger on Sunday. It is a delicate line to walk publicly. Acknowledge the machine’s limitations without publicly throwing a three time world champion under the bus. Tardozzi managed it, just about.
The broader competitive picture that Ducati are facing is one they have seen building for some time. Aprilia’s ascent did not happen overnight. Bezzecchi and his team were already showing genuine title level speed through the second half of 2025, and the winter development work has only accelerated that progress. Ducati arrived in 2026 having addressed the new Michelin rear tyre with a revised chassis, improved aerodynamics designed to reduce drag, and a new ride height device. On paper it looked like enough. On track, two rounds in, it has not been.
What happens next matters enormously. Tardozzi pointed to COTA, Qatar and Jerez as the circuits where the true competitive order will become clearer. Austin is a circuit Marquez has owned for most of his career. If Ducati cannot rediscover their edge there, the questions around the GP26 will grow louder and the pressure on Dall’Igna’s engineering team will intensify.
The most uncomfortable truth in all of this is one nobody at Ducati has said out loud yet. For the first time in years, the most dominant manufacturer in MotoGP history is not setting the pace. Aprilia are. And Tardozzi’s public admission that Ducati cannot keep leaning on their reigning world champion to compensate for shortcomings in the package is as clear a statement of intent as the factory has made in a long time.
