How MotoGP Stewards Decide Rider Penalties

MotoGP steward chairman Simon Crafar has explained why penalties are not based simply on the consequences of an incident. Stewards consider factors including the rider’s mistake, intent, danger and circumstances. Opening-lap incidents can receive greater scrutiny because several riders may be placed at risk. A failed but legitimate overtaking attempt, for example, can initially result in a Long Lap penalty rather than a punishment matching the damage caused.
